BMW vs Mercedes-Benz: A Peek into the Past

BMW 2 Series

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, or BMW, drove onto the scene as an automotive manufacturer in 1922. A German company that began by producing aircraft engines in 1916, BMW is now the 14th-largest producer of motor vehicles. In 2020, they produced 2,255,637 vehicles. They’re also known for producing motorcycles, with more than 168,000 produced in 2020 alone.

Mercedes-Benz was founded in 1926, a few years after BMW had already been producing luxury cars. They’re known for producing not only their well-known luxury vehicles, but commercial vehicles as well. In 2020, they produced an impressive 2,164,187 vehicles—not quite as impressive as the output of BMW, but impressive nonetheless.

BMW vs Mercedes-Benz: What's on Offer?

BMW X5 for SaleAs luxury cars are the bread and butter of these companies, it’s important to know what kind of model lineups you have access to. Both have extensive lineups of:

Mercedes has a fantastic set in each of these categories. They have a range of nine SUVs, five sedans, and seven coupes. If you’re looking for a vehicle for a growing family, there’s the GLA, GLB, and GLC SUVs, but if you’re looking just for you, then check out their range of coupes, like the CLA, C-Class, or E-Class.

If you want to feel spoiled for choice, then check out BMW’s range. With 11 SAVs®, six sedans, and eight coupes, you’ll have more options than you’ll know what to do with! Check out the entire X range if you’re looking for an SAV®, but if you’re looking for something sportier, check out the Z4 Roadster.

BMW vs Mercedes-Benz: Polish the Trophy Shelf

BMW 3 SeriesA storied history and plenty of options to choose from are all well and good, but what is really impressive is racking up a bunch of awards for the shelf. J.D. Power began their rating system in 2002, and awards vehicles across three categories:

  • J.D. Power Quality Award: This award goes to the brand that had the fewest problems reported by car owners within the first 90 days of ownership.
  • J.D. Power Dependability Award: You can bring home this award if your brand had the fewest reported problems reported by car owners during the last year with their 3-year-old vehicle.
  • J.D. Power Performance Award: To take this award home, you brand will need to have the highest new car owner design and performance ratings after the first 90 days of ownership.

In 2020, Mercedes-Benz managed to get one award, which is amazing! However, BMW still pulls ahead with six total awards in 2020.

BMW vs Mercedes-Benz: The Choice Is Obvious

When you want luxury, you’re automatically going to think of BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but when it comes to your final choice, it seems obvious. With a longer history and more cars produced, a bigger lineup, and more awards than its competitor, BMW shines a bit brighter than Mercedes.
