Viscosity Helps Find the Perfect Oil

If you ever read 10W-30 on a bottle of motor oil and had no clue what the hidden meaning was, you are not the only one. This rating, however, is fairly easy to understand. It represents oil's viscosity or how fast it flows at various temperatures.

The first number, for example, indicates a viscosity at low temperatures. In this case, 10W means your oil is thin and it will lubricate the engine fast when the outside temperatures in Spokane are low. The second number, however, is the viscosity at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. In other words, it indicates hot-weather, high viscosity that represents thick oil that works best in the summer.

Understanding viscosity will help you purchase the right motor oil and, in turn, prolong the useful life of your engine. You can bring any other questions related to the topic to our service center at BMW of Spokane and we will find your perfect oil.
